Types of Plating
STERLING ELECTRO PLATING offers the following plating finishes.
Silver
Pure Silver (99.9%) applied to items used in the electrical industry through to bridal tiaras. If an anti- tarnish is not applied, the silver will tarnish over time. Don’t wait for ‘special occasions’ to use the silverware. The more it is used and hand washed, the less polishing with be required. Silver plating yields a micro bright soft white deposit to any practical thickness.
Gold 23 Carat Hard Gold
A bright rich colour of 24 Carat Gold with additives that make it extremely hard wearing. Designed for jewellery with a high tolerance wear factor. If you have experienced costume jewellery gold that rubs away quickly, it is definitely not hard gold.
Gold 24 Carat Soft
Pure gold deposit is slightly dull. For those that require high purity and not concerned with the softness of gold. Not recommended for jewellery unless plated with hard gold over the top. Mainly used in cutting-edge medical research. Top end medals are plated up to 40 microns soft then 2.5 microns of hard gold.
Bright Copper
Brilliant ductile copper with excellent leveling to any practical thickness is possible. Mainly used as an undercoat before other metals are applied. It is also used when plating non-metallic items such as baby shoes.
Dull Copper
Reasonably ductile matt finish. Used mostly as an undercoat for other metals. Industrial usage where appearance is not the main concern.
Florentine Bronze
Simply put, it is oxidized copper making new items look worn, used and antique. No two items will ever be the same exact colour. From blues to chocolate brown appearance, 1000’s of possibilities are available. We normally keep it simple by offering a dark and light option.
Bright Nickel
Levels imperfections, very hard and bright. Will dull over in time if no other metals are electro-plated over the top. It is possible to re-polish. It is the metal that gives the mirror like characteristics to chrome. Nickel is always the metal under chrome. It is also used on some items under the silver. If your silver will not stay bright like it used to, then there is a high chance that you are polishing nickel.
Tin
Tin plating process is widely used in the electronics industry because of its ability to protect the base metal from oxidization ,good solder ability and the low cost in comparison to Silver.Tin is also used in the food processing industry as it is non-toxic, highly ductile and corrosion resistant.
